Coal-Carrying Train Derails in Chillicothe

CHILLICOTHE (Ken Hines) -- Railroad investigators are trying to determine the cause of a derailment that damaged several train cars and a large portion of track.

Eleven Norfolk-Southern cars derailed near Downtown Chillicothe at approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday, leaving mangled sections of track in their wake.

The train -- which did not overturn -- was carrying a large shipment of coal when the derailment occurred. None of that payload spilled, according to investigators.

A conductor and an engineer who were on-board the train when it left the tracks were not hurt.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the derailment, and have not released a timeline for the removal of the train.
