Store Workers, Customer Help Nab Mansfield Prison Escapee

MANSFIELD (Ken Hines) -- An escaped inmate's trip to an Ashland store ended with his apprehension because of the actions of employees and a customer, according to investigators.

James David Myers was arrested at Olivesburg General Store after being tackled by a customer Mark Cooper, who held the inmate down with the help of employees.

Store workers said they recognized Myers's face because of wanted pictures posted in the area by law enforcement agents.

Myers escaped from the Mansfield Correctional Institution on Wednesday night. He is serving a 40-years-to-life prison sentence for rape, burglary, and kidnapping.

Olivesburg employees said Myers confirmed his identity to police officers after they arrived at the store.

Cooper said he knew as soon as he gained control during his struggle with Myers that the escapee was not going anywhere until police arrived.

“I’m confident enough, I guess, in my strength, once I grab a hold of somebody he’s not gonna get back up,” he said.

Authorities were aware of Myers's presence in the Ashland area after receiving tips from 911 callers.

Investigators continue to work to determine how the inmate was able to escape from the prison.
