Dublin Hopes to Make Bridge Street More Urban, Pedestrian Friendly

Updated: Thursday, March 14 2013, 10:41 PM EDT

DUBLIN--The city of Dublin has plans to make a denser, more pedestrian friendly downtown.

It's known as the "Bridge Street District," and city planners have been discussing improvements to it for years.

Last December, the city purchased more than 12 acres along Riverside Drive. The space will be used to build a park as well as expand commercial and residential development.

There are even plans for a pedestrian bridge that will connect the historic westside to the new park.

"We do the suburban thing really great. We want to provide a mix to this area too," Rachel Ray said, city planner for Dublin.

After the city discusses its budget this summer, officials hope to break ground in a year. They hope newcomers will move into lofts or downtown apartments.
