What's Bugging You?

Here's What's Bugging You the week of March 8th, 2010

Dr. Derek Stone with the Doctors at Hilliard Square reports in that he's seeing Shingles.  it's a painful rash with blisters typically on your chest but can appear anywhere. it's caused by the chickenpox virus that's was dormant in your nerves, now reactivated due to a weak immune system. treat it with anti-viral medications along with pain medication or steroids.  there's now a vaccine recommended for those over 60.

Dr. David Dawdy with Associated Pediatrics is seeing a lot of nose bleeds in toddlers and young teens. it could be due to allergies, picking the nose, respiratory infections or the extra dry air this time of year. control the nose bleed by sitting up, then squeezing the nose just behind the tip using your thumb and index finger. see your doctor if the bloody nose lasts longer than twenty minutes.

Dr. Terry Barber at Nationwide Children's Hospital is seeing Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV.  in older children and adults it's one of the main causes of the common cold.   in younger children it causes difficulty breathing, coughing, and wheezing. treat it with a cool mist humidifier, breathing treatments may be needed. luckily rsv season only last until April.
