Ark. officials trying to keep Cooper Tire plant
December 03, 2008 17:36 EST

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) -- Arkansas and Texas are working on an incentive package to convince Ohio-based Cooper Tire and Rubber Co. to continue operating its tire plant in Texarkana.

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe says the incentive is considerable, but not as large as the $30 million pitched by Mississippi officials.

Cooper Tire has said that sales of replacement tires are forecast to decline slightly, and because of cost pressures, the company is considering closing one of its U.S. plants.

Cooper's other sites are in Albany, Ga.; Tupelo, Miss; and Findlay, Ohio, where the company is based.
